A Brief Introduction to the School of Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology
The School of Surveying and Mapping was established in 2008, whose predecessor is Surveying Engineering established in 1988, and its history goes back to the Department of Mining when school was founded in 1958. In 1978, it firstly enrolled undergraduate students majoring in mine surveying. In 1985, it began to jointly train postgraduate students. In 1990, it was authorized to grant master's degree in engineering surveying, making it the earliest institution in Northwest China to grant master's degree in surveying and mapping. In 2005, it obtained the master's degree in the first-level discipline of surveying and mapping Science and technology. In 2010, it obtained the master's degree in the first-level discipline of geography, and in 2018, it obtained the doctorate degree in the first-level discipline of surveying and mapping science and technology.
After more than 30 years of independent education, the college has four undergraduate majors, including Surveying and mapping Engineering, Geographic Information Science, physical geography and Resources and Environment, and remote sensing science and Technology, which also has the right to grant doctoral degree in surveying and mapping science and technology (Engineering), master degree in geography (science), and master degree in the field of resources and environment (formerly surveying and mapping engineering) . It has become a teaching and research-oriented college with distinctive discipline characteristics, reasonable professional structure, abundant faculty, advanced experimental equipment, and complete training chain of undergraduate, master and doctoral talents.
On June 1, 2008, the School of Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology was inaugurated
The College consists of four aspects in teaching engineering of surveying and mapping, geographic information science, physical geography and resources environment, remote sensing science and technology , and 6 graduate schools in geographical spatial information engineering, geodetic data processing and application, mining subsidence and disaster management, digital (wisdom) city and city security, great geographical data and watershed ecology, institute of remote sensing and disaster monitoring, etc.. It also has provincial and ministerial level teaching and research platforms such as Shaanxi Geospatial Information Engineering and Technology Research Center and Shaanxi Surveying and Mapping Geographic Information Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center. What’s more, It has 16 training bases cooperate talents with industrial, academic and research, such as geodetic data processing Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Xi 'an Survey and Surveying Institute, Aerial Survey and Remote Sensing Bureau of China Coal Geology Bureau.
At present, The college has 80 faculty and staff and has a team of energetic, efficient and capable teachers. Both academician Wang Renxiang, a famous expert on photogrammetry, and academician Gong Jianya, dean of School of Remote Sensing Information Engineering, Wuhan University, have been appointed as double academicians. Academician Yang Yuanxi, deputy chief division of Beidou, Yao Yibin, dean of School of Geomatics, Wuhan University, Li Bofeng, Dean of School of Geomatics, Tongji University, and many other well-known experts and scholars in the industry have been appointed as adjunct professors. Now, the College has 1 member of the Teaching Steering Committee of Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education, 1 provincial and ministerial top professional and technical talent, 11 professors, 24 associate professors and 26 lecturers, among which doctors account for 80.7%.
In the past five years, the Institute has undertaken 20 high-level scientific research projects, such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Support Program and the National defense construction project, won 3 excellent provincial resource courses, 2 provincial and ministerial teaching achievement awards, and 1 provincial teaching team. It has won 2 national awards and 12 provincial and ministerial awards, as well as published 121 academic papers, including 68 SCI and EI indexed papers, and 15 textbooks and monographs. Accumulating 8 promotion achievements and creating hundreds of millions of social and economic benefits.
The College has trained nearly 6,000 professionals in surveying and mapping and geographic information for the country, mainly distributed in surveying and mapping, geoinformation, railway, highway, water conservancy, power, geology, forestry, land, construction, coal, education, urban rail, meteorology, security, IT and other industries and research institutes. It has engaged in basic surveying and mapping, engineering surveying and management, resource exploration, environmental disaster monitoring, real estate surveying, development and application of digital city and geographic information software, etc. In the past five years, the one-time employment rate of graduates has been above 97%.
