About Laurenson University
Laurenson University, located in the core area of —— Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, offers 170 programs with bachelor's degrees, master's and doctoral levels. Science, engineering, environmental studies, health, and the humanities are all the dominant disciplines. Each professor faces small classes with an average of 19 students, and Lawrenson University provides an outstanding academic environment for students to promote one-on-one discussions with faculty members and to go more deeply into academic excellence.
The history of the Laurentian Federation (including Huntington University, Thorneloe University, and Sudbury University) dates back to the College du Sacre-Coeur, founded in 1913, and welcomes nearly 9,000 students each year in a friendly, bilingual, inclusive and multicultural community. In addition to advanced laboratories, many libraries, eight student homes and some food, Lauren provides students with a variety of sports and recreational facilities such as pool pools, runways, climbing walls, hiking trails to further increase everyone's intellectual development and vitality.
Historical review of cooperation with Xi'an University of Science and Technology
In the summer of 2019, Laurenson University welcomed the first batch of engineering students from Xi'an University of Science and Technology to participate in a two-week mining engineering certificate program. The project was a huge success. Students learned English, improved team building skills and participated in various activities on campus and Sudbury. In addition, students participated in a series of workshops in the field of mining engineering conducted by industry professionals and academic researchers.
In fall 2019, six graduate students attended Laurenson University for one semester. They studied English for academic preparation and participated in a series of mining engineering courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
In 2020, the program was made available online in synchronization due to the COVID-19 outbreak and travel restrictions. Teachers and industry professionals show the content of the program and let the students interact with the host. Over a two-week period, 61 students participated in the comprehensive program that focused on English language development, cultural competence, and professional mining topics taught by researchers, professors, and industry experts.
In 2021, Laurentian University is pleased to offer a new program that will focus on developing academic research skills, intercultural exchanges, as well as expertise in mapping science and technology, mining engineering, civil engineering, environmental science, and more.
Project introduction
The Research Engineering Academic Exchange Hybrid (REACH) program is designed for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in engineering at Xi'an University of Science and Technology. This course targets students who want to further develop academic research skills, learn how to communicate effectively in English in both academic and professional settings, and to better understand communication in cross-cultural settings. This program is unique in that students will have the opportunity to gain a professional understanding of the mining sector in a Canadian context. Through a series of workshops conducted by mining industry professionals, students will feel the best engineering practices and dive into the environmental, social, and economic impacts affecting mining decisions and larger communities. Finally, students will be given the opportunity to participate in conversational groups led by Lawrenson University students to support a higher standard of English in a formal business environment.
The expected effect of the project
Paper research
At the end of this course, students will demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to write a multi-piece academic research paper.
EAP
At the end of this course, students will improve their critical thinking skills by analyzing various academic reading texts and academic lectures.
English Communication
Through the study of this course, students will master the skills to communicate effectively in intercultural settings.
Curriculum Platform
The REACH program will be provided remotely to the students, and all English courses will be conducted simultaneously. This means that students will study on-site with their teachers at a scheduled time. To accommodate the 12-hour time lag and student academic arrangements, the course will be held twice a week in the morning and / or evening. See the course schedule for more details. The main platform for teaching content is ClassIn. The Lawrenson University School of Languages has specifically ordered the platform to open an account for Xidian University students and offer all the language courses overseas. This learning management system is specifically designed for distance learning and has multiple functions to support student participation and foster an interactive learning environment. It allows for large and small panel discussion forums, live chat, and document submission through task functions. The professional engineering seminar series will use the zoom as a demonstration platform. At each workshop, a senior mining engineering student will attend to support the translation of key information and facilitate the Q & A session.
Project evaluation
Students will receive a personalized progress report at the end of the course. Students will be evaluated in all four aspects of the course. Feedback is an important component of learning, and students will receive constructive feedback from their teachers on a variety of evaluated skills. This will include multiple paragraphs of research reports, oral reports, understanding of academic reading text, and submission of assigned tasks. The purpose of the report was to provide each student with their language competence in the specific area being assessed. Final results will not affect students from obtaining a certificate of completion. All students attending this course will receive a certificate of completion.
